The list below is drawn from a variety of sources. All have something interesting to offer. Some of the commercial sites give interesting free trials that are worth following up.

Language Learning Advice

BBC		The BBC language section includes some basic courses in European languages and some other interesting stuff. See the Tips section for advice from other learners.
The Older Language Learner		An excellent article, which is well worth reading.
Language Learning		FX Micheloud's language learning page. A rather quirky page put together by an individual with a keen interest in language learning.
Language Schools		Database of Language Schools.
Spanish		A site dedicated to learning Spanish, but which includes some good general advice.
A Guide for South Asian Languge Learners		Information on learning languages from South Asia, of interest to others too.

Commercial Sites

Language Now		Transparent Language produce excellent language learning software. Website also includes games & a regular newsletter for people learning major languages.
Rosetta Stone		Free trials of Rosetta Stone language learning courses in a wide variety of languages.
LearnPlus		Online courses in Spanish and German.
LinguaLearn		Combines a soft sell approach to their own product with good advice and some useful links.
SavoirFaire		The Savoir Faire Institute in California offers courses in many major including French and Spanish and also includes some basic advice on language learning.
Ahoi		Linked to Vtrain vocabulary learning software. This page has a number of interesting links and tips.

Phonetics

IPA Help		Use this SIL software to learn or revise the sounds of the International Phonetic Alphabet by clicking on a character in the chart. IPA Help supplies spoken examples of both the International Phonetic Alphabet and word lists with language examples.
University College London		Interactive web-based tutorials and other resources from University College London.
University of Lausanne		Online phonetics course in English and French.
Fonetiks		Online pronunciation guides for a number of languages. You have to pay a registration fee to get all of the information, but there are a number of free examples.
University of Washington		Resources with particular reference to the study of spoken English.

Omniglot		Site dedicated to different writing systems around the world.
Live Journal		Discussion board for language learners.
Hitch Hikers's Guide to the Galaxy		BBC site which aims to be a repository for information on every subject. Contributions come from members of the public around the world who feel they have something to add.

SIL Language Learning		Excellent resource with lots of good info for the independent language learner.
Language Impact		Aimed at independent language learners. Includes: electronic language-learning newsletter, email forum, plus equipment & software recommendations.
TravLang		Interesting site with lots of info on specific languages and further links.
Manchester University		Excellent short guide to language learning, including tips on planning and evaluation of your progress.
