EthnoArts
Objectives
Module I: Research Methods for EthnoArts
The objective of this module is to enable students to describe and interact with people, structures, meanings and processes involved in artistic domains such as ethnomusicology, drama, dance, story-telling and visual arts. Students are familiarised with methodologies such as interview, observation, participation and media recording. They learn to help communities self-evaluate which local art forms might be most appropriate to carry Christian messages, and to determine factors that might affect the acceptance or rejection of indigenous arts.
By the end of the module, the student has:
- Learnt how to conduct basic field research in various art forms, profiling and testing a strategy for initial ethnographic research within a local community
- Become familiar with at least one ethnographic methodology and has presented an overview of such
- Completed an annotated bibliography of course readings
- Developed a plan (or case study) for researching one or more aspects of indigenous performing arts in a chosen context, presenting the write-up in a style suitable for publication within the academic community
- Become familiar with current trends and implications for music and other arts with respect to fieldwork, minority groupings, ethics, gender and globalisation.
Module II: Applied EthnoArts
The objective of this module is to give participants the means to identify and plan activities that result in the co-creation of Scripture based and community development messages that meet desired kingdom goals through the utilisation of community valued art forms. These include music, drama, dance, story telling and/or visual arts. Participants also consider issues of ownership, sustainability and positive self-identity that such forms may engender.
By the end of the course, the student has:
- Devised a possible strategy involving indigenous arts to enable a community to move towards its desired kingdom goals, incorporating the wider context of language based development
- Considered various means for developing contextualised artistic expression, nurturing local artists and encouraging positive self-identity
- Completed an annotated bibliography of course readings
- Developed a Results Based Management plan (or case study) for co-creation of one or more aspects of indigenous performing arts in a chosen context, presenting the write-up in a style suitable for publication within the academic community
- Attained a basic knowledge of field recording and audio editing skills.
